There is only one rig I would buy as a first A Kenwood TS520. If you
get it at or below $300 in fair condition you will have absolutly no
touble selling it for the same price. I have done this on two
occasions. They are great rigs and will get you in the air.
Good luck.

Subject: Frequency Counter Recommendation?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Would anyone care to make a lower-cost frequency counter recommendation?
The more affordable models seem to be
Radio Shack 22-305 $100
OptoElectronics 3300 $130
Startek 1350 $130 list
I notice the OE has a hold button while the RS doesn't. Not sure about the
Startek. My intuition tells me this could be worth the extra $'s. Any
comments?
Thanks.

De: Greg KN4EL
I bought last Summer, an SDP600 simplex/duplex autopatch
from J.com. I used the unit for 3 weeks while on vacation and have
no use for it. I would like to exchange it along with an Icom
2at (NOT 02at) thumbwheel/ttp handhelt 2m radio for a handheld scanner
preferrably bearcat 2500xlth or $300 cash for both. Would exchange
patch alone for bearcat 200xlth. (Prefer both with cell phone mods)
Please reply here if interested or to my email add.
Tnx and 73

1) Wow, $516? Did the price just jump? Is this the
result of the lousy exchange rate?
2) Do you remember your serial number? Specifically, the two
numerical digits immediately following the alphabetic letter.
This identifies the lot number.
I am curious as to whether Yaesu changed the CPU programming
to comply with the STUPID ECPA rules and "broke" the microcode.
A flashing display used to indicate that the PLL is unlocked.
Just curious.

Last Saturday at a local hamfest, I plunked down $516 bucks on a FT-530. I
was impressed with this radio... until this afternoon.
After a 10 minute conversation on 440 with no problems at all, I needed
the rig to call a friend of mine. When I turned it on, the UHF display
was blinking. I have tried everything to get it to stop. Now, both
VHF and UHF are blinking. Since last Saturday, this radio has been used
less than 10 hours total.
I have pulled both batteries out, tried to do both cold and warm starts -
nothing at all will bring this thing back!
When I returned the rig to the store, all the folks there tried to get
it back. When the head honcho called Yaesu, I was not impressed - and
I don't think he was either .... apparently Yaesu knows this problem
exists. I overheard the conversation - the owner of the store said, and
I quote, "Yes - we have a bunch of them in the back.... You mean the others
are probably bad also? Oh, wonderful!"
The store let me exchange it for a IC-W21AT, after I told them I was
really afraid to get another FT-530.
Anyone thinking about one of these rigs should definatly consider something
else.
I realize that there are other folks who have these rigs and have no
trouble. But I have had trouble, and after hearing this phone conversation,
others will also.
